Huh. I *like* the two-part Lewis format.
I was riveted, watching the end of part 2 of "Down Among the Fearful," when my downloaded copy cut short. Arggggh! Downloading a different one now.
Anyway, I was noticing that I mentally discarded characters and storylines as the list of suspects narrowed down. I paid a lot more attention to enjoying the characterizations and acting during the first half, when they were setting up the world of the episode. This way, I get to enjoy both ways of watching. I missed a lot of richness in the complete episodes, I think, because I was focusing only on the solution of the mystery.
So far, I find it magnificent the way this season is focusing on issues of faith. My beliefs are closer to Lewis's than Hathaway's, but I'm a fan of Hathaway, of decency, of good writing and acting. I like seeing how long exposure to crime is not desensitizing Hathaway.
I enjoyed the close look at the Tarot reader's deck. I smiled at how new those cards looked; I bet that character's deck ought to have been more beat up than that. I should take up reading cards again. I haven't done anything with Tarot since I delved into it for writing Seven of Cups for the 2011 SSHG Exchange. I'm proud of that one, now that I have some distance from it.
Neck brace, sideburns, shoulder blades. Hathaway's got an unforgettable look for this episode, doesn't he? :-)

Not that I watch the eps for the mystery, though. But when I get my DVD I will not be watching them in two halves *g*
I could have done without the tarot - that's always been hugely off-putting for me in any context. But I did think the final couple of scenes with R&J were very, very well-acted, and LF is doing an excellent job of conveying, with little explicit text, someone who's extremely conflicted about his life at present - but not at all conflicted about the fact that he is very fond of his governor.
Very little, if any, James in the next episode, though :(
Your way of putting it is perfect. A James who is conflicted about a lot of things, but not his love for Lewis.
I wonder if the lack of James in the next episode will result in my appreciating Lewis's beauty more. James has been rather a scene-stealer of late.
