The first time I encountered John Nicks, legendary British American figure skating coach, was while watching the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. He coached Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner and had to tell Tai, after warmup, that Randy had a pulled muscle and they weren't going to compete. Since then, I have learned that Mr. Nicks has been everywhere in the sport, universally loved and respected. His current high-profile student is Ashley Wagner. If you've seen him elsewhere in the past decade, it was probably as he was running after Sasha Cohen, trying to get her to behave.
Anyway, when I worked with him briefly, I learned, to my delight, that he signs e-mails "J.A.W.N." (His middle names are Allen Wisden.) I think of this every time I read of fanon Sherlock yelling for his Jawn.

Hahahah.
That Olympics really ran the gamut of emotion. I guess they all do, but that one really brought it home to me. Maybe because I was old enough to recognize how fragile the world can be.
