tree of life
On Saturday, it finally happened:  Geeklet became old enough to iron.  She can handle the heavy iron and I feel I can trust her not to burn herself or do any damage, as long as I'm in the room with her.  So now she can be a lot more helpful (as opposed to "helpful") when I'm quilting.  With her assistance, I finished 20 potholders to send to the bakery along with the quilt display.

Meanwhile, Geeklet's public school has no funding for an art program.  The art teacher's salary is paid through private fundraising.  The previous three years Geeklet attended, we've been asked to donate $25 per family, which Husband and I did, although it was a chunk of money.  This year, we were asked for $100 per family!!!  That was steep enough that I went "urgh" and put it out of my mind for a while.  But I do believe in it and I decided to work on fundraising with Geeklet and her friend A. when they have a day off from school on Wednesday.  Husband's workplace has agreed to let us sell there:  chocolate frogs, whole wheat chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes with fondant toppers, knitted coffee cup sleeves, quilted potholders, baby quilts, and raffle tickets for a quilt to be displayed (the one pictured in pieces below).  Geeklet and A. can bake and iron with me on Wednesday and between the three of us, we ought to be able to raise $200.  And it'll solve the problem of what to do with two eight-year-olds all day.  Eventually, they will realize that if they stick around to bug me, I'll expect them to clean up or something, and that will encourage them to go off on their own.

Sewing away right now.  Yay, quilting!  Yet even within this post of happiness, I cannot suppress a roar of fury:  Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Batting, how I loathe you!  UGH, all these pills!  WHY is it a bestselling batting?  It's horrible!  Never, ever, ever again.  Batting is too expensive for me to throw away the remaining queen-sized rolls I bought (case of 6), but I cannot wait to get you OUT of my life.  *grrrrrrr*  Quilters' Dream Cotton, I will never cheat on you again!

But I cannot be too growly, for that ultimate joker, Laurence Fox, has committed slashfic on his Twitter in celebration of tonight's airing of the Lewis series finale, pt 1.  No, seriously.  Along with crackfic (which he marked with the hashtags "#housefireathobsons" "#crispy").

I think it's a great idea to use private fundraising to fund arts education during budget shortfalls. It shows that parents are invested enough in the program to raise funds for these programs.

I am so glad you get to quilt again
Woohoo for putting the child to work! (I insisted on a tall, athletic donor b/c our kid WILL be doing our yardwork while we're in our 50s.)

What a brilliant idea to do your own fundraising! GO YOU, and of course Geeklet and A. Group efforts can change the world!

It's a fun way to fundraise! There are already $70 worth of pre-orders for chocolate frogs and cookies, and they're looking forward to hanging the raffle quilt. I'm almost done with the quilting and should have it bound by tonight. No hanging sleeve, since they have clips there and I'm presenting it as a baby quilt. I get the girls tomorrow and we will be up to our elbows (literally, I'm sure) in sweets!

The wonderful thing is that my daughters are pleased with me when we show up places with these things we've produced together. Your kids must feel that way! They must look at the stuff you make and realize that their mom is really quite talented!

By the way, do you have favorite battings? She said, picking more lint off her quilt top.

Yay for $70 raised so far! My fingers are crossed that your beautiful quilt will raise the bar and bring in the cash for the art program. :)

My kids are pretty good about my helping out, though the definitely had a much great appreciation for it when they were little. I spent almost eight years as a "room parent" organizing parties and crafts for holidays and events. Each of them had their own way of showing their appreciation, Mr. G's being a bit snerkier than his sister's. Good memories!

I tend towards Warm & Natural or Quilter's Dream, though I have used a lot of Hobbs as well. The Hobbs factory is about two hours from Austin and they sell their imperfect batting by the pound to charity organizations. Linus sends a volunteer up there about once a quarter for rolls. It certainly isn't my favorite for personal projects.
