Slavery at Monticello exhibit in April!

I can't wait for this!  This is amazing.  It was less than 20 years ago that the curators at Monticello were still insisting that Jefferson could never have lowered himself to father children with slaves.  Historian Annette Gordon-Reed showed me the dazzling possibilities of history writing with her work on Jefferson's slave family, both before and after that debate was settled.  She won a suitcaseful of awards for that work, eventually, including a MacArthur genius grant.  Now, just three blocks away from the house where Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, the National Constitution Center is teaming up with Monticello to present Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello, a special exhibit.  This is thrilling.  This is truth.  This is history when everybody counts and nobody is trying to suppress the truth.  I feel like singing just thinking about this.

The boys saw the sign, and asked good questions, and are eager to go.
