Because exercise makes you smarter.

drinking chocolate
How to motivate a constitutionally sedentary Ravenclaw to exercise:

Gryffindor approach doesn't work:  Let off some steam!
Hufflepuff approach doesn't work:  Be healthy and stick around for your kids!
Slytherin approach doesn't work:  You'll look better!

But tell me the scientifically proven ways it will make me smarter and improve my mood and I will haul my lazy ass to the gym.  Since apparently eating chocolate and growling at posts on tumblr don't do the trick.

To my surprise, I'm liking torturous exercises that build up the arms and shoulders.  When they hurt and I want to quit, I motivate myself with this mental image of Mr. Cumberbatch from Little Favour:

I don't look any different; I manage two visits to the gym per week, usually, and I don't do much.  But my arms feel different.  In my imagination, they look like the arms in this picture.  :-)  :-)  :-)

They look that they are very much in love. Left guy is going for the nipple, I think, or maybe to nuzzle the underarm. And of course, there's the thigh grip.

That is a lovely picture.

I wonder what it says about me that all I register from this picture is "arm muscles."

Upper body work is so gratifying. Congratulations on finding a way to motivate yourself!

I used to laugh at guys who were addicted to building up bulging biceps and shoulders at the expense of their lower bodies or cardio. NO LONGER. I totally see the appeal. Rawr!

I still laugh at those guys because DON'T SKIP LEG DAY BRO. But yeah, the first time I lifted fifty pounds over my head? I was like "Okay, yeah, I totally get this now."

That's why Thrusters and other ground-to-overhead movements like the Clean and Jerk are my faves. Because I get all the benefit of a lower body lift, but still get to throw stuff up in the air.

It's fun feeling stronger, isn't it? I'm so glad you're having such a positive experience at the gym! I always liked working out and will probably integrate more weights and machines into my routine once they stop heating the pool. And yes, in my mind, I have arms like Chris Hemsworth :D

Hooray for BDNF expression!!

I'm not sure I feel stronger -- I really do very little and I'm taking it as slow as I need to, so I don't scare myself off -- but I do feel some new muscle, and that is some really *fast* gratification! It totally makes me want to build up more. I don't know that I'll ever look like anything but a lumpy, mainly sedentary person, but I haven't given up on this yet, and that's more than I was doing before. *beaming and flexing*

No, actually, I do feel stronger, come to think of it! \o/ It is nice that your question made me think of the bigger picture and not just of the gradual week-to-week changes. Thank you!

Working out makes me feel awesome. Both for doing something good for myself and because, well, strength.

And this:

I try really, really hard to motivate myself to work out using photos of Ben and his little lithe Sherlock body. It doesn't work... but it gets closer to working than any other inspiration. ;)

Ha! I love that Ravenclaw motivation. That would get me out the door.

Meanwhile, when are you speaking on Saturday? I'm thinking of coming for part of the day, and the program doesn't seem to include individual talks. If it works out, I'd love to hear you. M.

Potterlock, 2 PM, will be my only talk.

I'll lead an Elephant in the Room workshop (coordinating people's conversations, not presenting) 7 PM.

I'll be present for the Crossover Shipping recording that Emma's modding, 6 PM.

Now running back screaming to work more on the Potterlock talk.

P.S. And it will be fabulous, I'm sure. Good luck finishing it off!

Fingers crossed that they apply; I just made them up! You'll have to tell me if they work.

Well, I'm already a regular fitness buff, but I'm just so amused by the list that I wanted to share it with my other friends. I think they'd get a kick out of it. :D
